I've been trying to find a model of exercise that fits with a simple lifestyle. Now, running/jogging is an obvious choice for cardio exercise since you only need a pair of sneakers and shorts/sweats/t-shirt. You can run anywhere and it doesn't take up space in your life other than time (if you have good input on cardio pls share).
For building strength I've had more difficulties. Bodyweight training doesn't require equipment and you can do it most places, so it's a good candidate, but it makes progressive overload more difficult (that is, increasing weight to induce strength development). After you can lift your body without problems you need to make the exercises more complex to avoid stalling progress. With weights this problem doesn't exist. You simply add more weights to the bar or manual to keep progressing. With weights you either buy equipment or get a gym membership. Both have downsides, one fills up your living space with objects, the other is a continuous financial drain to have access to equipment owned by others. Some people are okay with renting services, like gyms, but I am not.
So I considered simplifying things by replacing weights with other heavy objects, such as rocks. They fill the same purpose but doesn't require ownership or a rent agreement. The main problem to this would be access to heavy objects and having a space to lift them in without looking like a retard. Especially people living in urban environments could have problems finding stuff to use on a regular basis. Living rurally I find heavy rocks to use very easily, and don't have a problem finding space to use.
So I ended up with using bodyweight exercises as a base, then use rocks to supplement the more complicated techniques to ensure progressive overload.
How do you guys combine a simple lifestyle and exercise?
