Recently moved to a new rental, dryer won't turn on. No light on in the barrel with the door open, electronic control interface won't power on, she's completely dead. It's a very well-maintained property, I presume the prior tenant had an operating dryer. The house has a 4-prong outlet and the dryer came from the factory with a 3-prong, so I bought a 4-prong pigtail and wired it up.When testing the outlet I got 240V across the lines and 120V from each line to ground as expected. But only got 20-30V from each line to neutral. Suspecting a loose/corroded neutral connection I took a look inside the outlet, and saw this hoppy horseshat. Why on earth someone would install a four-prong receptacle and wire it this way is beyond me, I'm not sure but the only thing I can think of is that it was meant to be used with a 3-prong-to-4-prong adapter? If I jumped the neutral and ground lugs at both receptacle and dryer I assume it would work like a traditional 3-prong circuit but I'm not sure enough that I won't get electrocuted when the ground falls off in the breaker panel and I'm washing clothes naked at 2am. If I reinstalled the original 3-prong pigtail would an aforementioned adapter work just to get me rolling? Would it be okay to jumper the neutral to ground and use the 4-prong pigtail? Should I call the landlord and make them fix this crap? Or am I just missing something obvious? Need to do some laundry. Las Vegas, NV if it matters.Any help or ideas appreciated, thank you in advance! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2ic71AN
