Hello I am hoping for a little advice. I want to cover over some old mastic. The previous owners of my new home put mastic and vinal tile over hardwood in the master bedroom closet. I tried all kinds of stuff to get it up, but eventually I gave up on getting the hardwood back. The tile is all gone and I plan to just put down new layment over the mastic and use stick on tile over that. I might be pulling it all out in the next 5 years to build a second bathroom so I don't need anything to fancy. Here is where I need some advice. The mastic smells, my wife in particular can't stand being in the room even with the closet door shut. My plan was to put down a vapor barrier over the mastic under the layment to help seal it off. A construction friend of mine suggested I just cut up trashbags as he thinks that will keep the smell out better. But the room right below this closet is a bathroom without much ventilation. Should I be worried about moisture between the mastic and a vapor barrier (trash bags) is there something else I should use to block the oder that would some how allow the humidity through?I have had it all tested for asbestos and it is safe.Let me know if there is more I can explain or if pictures would help.
