My boyfriend and I are at the point in our relationship where we are starting to discuss marriage. I have a few questions about the financial aspects and was hoping someone here could enlighten me or tell me where to find the answers to my questions. Our income levels are substantially different. He makes about 30k/year. I make around 80k. He has 2 young children (5 and 6) that he has primary physical custody of. Their mother does not consistently pay ordered child support. As a result of his income status he is eligible for some assistance from the state; primarily the state subsidizes a significant portion of his childcare expenses. Does anyone know, if we were to get married if he would lose these benefits based on my income? Another concern is as the kids get older. If they were applying for financial aide for college, would my income be considered if we're married? If we weren't? Is there a point at which my income would be considered regardless because we live together?
The kids aren't a deal breaker, obviously. They have lived in my house for the last 2 years, and we share household expenses for each other and the kids already. I'm just trying to be fully informed before making such a huge life decision. We live in Connecticut if that matters.
