I replaced the hinges on an old door recently, including plugging the holes with dowels/glue and re drilling new ones. The door hangs straight, the hinges are aligned from what I've been able to tell using a level/straight edge, and the door closes fine. Here's the problem: when the door closes, the top hinge plate on the door side pulls away from the door, while the jamb side plate on the bottom hinge pulls away from the jamb. This all causes the screws inside the wood to shift, making cracking sounds (like a quiet version of when you step on twigs).Any ideas on what the issue might be?Could it be that the new hinges are thinner than the old ones, so they sit a bit too deep in the mortises? I can't tell, but shims behind the hinge plates didn't really seem to do any good.Could it be that the hinges got bent around too much when one hinge was screwed in and I was moving the door around to position it to screw in the bottom hinge? Thanks in advance for any replies! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2x2QXrF
