I had an experience this week that I want to pass along. I've become very diligent about reading fine print on all my mail, especially credit card documents. I received a notice for an annual fee on a credit card (which was newly implemented on my travel air line card when the airline changed credit card companies about 2 years ago.) On the document it said "Your $40 annual fee will be billed 9/29, unless you call this number and we can discuss options." So I called this morning, asked for the fee to be waived and they were totally cool with it. I spoke to 2 reps who were very nice and I saved $40!

TL;DR Read your credit card documentation, they might tell you right up front how to avoid fees
