The classic cashier check overpayment. I'm an artist living in Chicago. You may have see some of my doodles in the comment sections. I'm glad I caught this, but I still feel cheated, and pretty stupid.

I get an email through my website with a dude saying he wants to buy some pieces from me. --"I am inquiring about your artwork sale in your gallery,do you ship across the state?Let me know so that i can communicate with you on the artworks that interest me so that we can proceed and let me have your updated web link to your gallery.

I will be looking forward to read from you.

Sincerely, Gary."

I got pretty excited, and said yeah I'll ship anywhere. So he tells me 3 pieces he is interested in. I said no problem the total is $750, how about we call it $650 and I will ship for free.

Sure no problem. I said ok, just check out through my store, and you can pay with debit, credit, or paypal. Scammer says, that's not going to work, and that he wanted to send a cashier check. So I figured maybe he was a bit older, and I said that's fine (I've had this happen before). I told him I would list those pieces on my website as (SOLD) and would ship the artwork once everything clears.

I get a cashier check today in a priority mail envelope. Open it up and to my initial excitement I see it was for 1,750. My first thought was DAMN, maybe he thinks my prices are too cheap. (I've also have had this happen before, where a person gets a piece from me, and they like it so much they actually send a bit more money.

Then I realized, fuck. This is exactly like what I've heard about. None of the names on the envelope, or the cashier check match his name, or his "Shipping Address". So I email him, asking if this was from him. I get this response: Anthony

Thank you so much for the mail,I appreciate you trust as well.

I instructed my associate to send to you the payment since am not in town.I will advice you to cash the payment and I will let you know what to do on the remaining balance. my wife is also considering purchasing some of your job but she as not make up her mind.Let me know as soon as you cash payment.

Regards, Gary.

So I went straight to my bank, they called the other bank, and the check almost made it through, except for 2 digits in the account number.

Well, at least I didn't ship the artwork or anything. But I'm pretty fucking bummed out. I'm not even scraping by, and I just thought I would share.
