The title may seem confusing, and a little bit crazy, but the best way to explain it is through a couple examples.
Example 1: When you're 20 years old, you start a new hobby; woodcarving. You think it will be fun so you buy all of the items necessary to do it: tools (including certain knives), blocks of wood, sand paper, maybe even a workbench. A year later, your enthusiasm wears off, and you abandon the items into a box in the garage.
"I don't want to throw them out. It would be a waste of the money I spent." Nine years later and those woodcarving supplies are still in the box in the garage. They've been out of sight, but not necessarily out of mind.
One more example.
Example 2: In college, you've been assigned a five-page paper on a Monday; it's due one week later. You procrastinate until Friday and get a little bit done. Friends invite you out and you think you'll be able to finish the paper over the weekend, so you go out.
However, think of how much freer (for a lack of a better term) you would feel if you had finished the paper before you went out.
This is the main idea: Even though "it" (an old hobby, work that needs to be done, a book you bought a month ago and never finished, etc.) isn't in sight and you aren't experiencing it at this moment, it still weighs on your mind.
"Out of sight, out of mind only gets you so far; I consider it to be short-term. Yes, throwing those clothes into the closet and shutting the door may feel good then, but knowing those clothes are still unfolded and are a mess in the closet still racks your unconscious.
Now, this isn't based on science (at least I haven't looked into if it is, although my instincts tell me one could find this based in scientific research), but my own experiences.
Take a look at your own life, past and present, and see if there is anything left unfinished. If so, decide how you want to proceed.
- Finish it
- Sell it
- Throw it away
You may find yourself calmer and more at peace after doing a thorough mental cleanse.
A half-finished chair in the garage that's been sitting there for months, may be doing more to prevent simple living than a messy room.
