Hi everyone!

I'm 24/F from New England and I am kinda sorta self-employed. I work at an established business doing spa services but make my own schedule. It's a very small business (just me and the owner). We have no contract or anything, I'm basically a ghost. I take CC payments from clients but all of it gets deposited into the Spa's bank account. The owner then pays me cash (only 42% of the total treatment cost) and she expects me to pocket it so I can "save lots of money!" She doesn't claim any cash.

However, I'm a good person and I like to follow rules and stuff like that. So I'm keeping spreadsheet of everything I make so I can claim it. My clients pay $70 an hour, and I take home $30 (before taxes). So I've made her $8,800 this year, while I've only made $6,500 cash. My estimate for this year will be around $16,000 between this and my part time job that is ending soon (on the books).

I'm so confused and really need help with the whole taxes thing.

  • Am I self-employed?

  • Do I get quickbooks and track my income or talk to an accountant?

  • Do I make quarterly payments or end of the year? I might make $500/mo in the winter but $2,000/mo in the summer so it varies greatly.

  • I'm probably going to make less than the poverty level income this year so how do self-employed taxes work in that situation?

Thank you!!!

tl;dr: Owner pays me under the table, tells me not to claim it. I want to claim it but new to this and not sure how to?
