I read the submission guidelines. Here is a link to the couch I have from Ikea's website which has a photo of it there. I searched but did not find the answers I was looking for, but I recognize that might be because there are a variety of search terms (shorten/cut, couch/sofa, ikea, etc.) involved so I might have missed a post that covered this. If I did, I apologize.Photo: This is the couch I have: http://ift.tt/2eWphw8 of couch: It has a removable, washable cover and a wood frame with metal coils in the bottom. Like most Ikea furniture, it came in a box and had to be assembled. The arms were attached separately. I have the matching ottoman as well.Location: Chicago, Wicker Park-Bucktown areaThis couch is too big for my small space, especially with that ottoman. But I like the ottoman (it has storage) almost more than the couch itself. My dog peed on the cushion, and I ended up throwing the cushion away since I messed up cleaning it (this is a common theme with me, the other cushion I had replaced for $150 when messed up cleaning it, too). But since it's too big, I was looking at getting a smaller couch or just a big chair when it occurred to me to look into whether there was any way to cut this thing in half and reattach one end's arm and leg to what used to be the center. I started searching for shortening a couch, and discovered that this is actually a thing that can be done, but the tutorials I saw online involved more complicated, continuous, non-Ikea sofas and so the project descriptions were somewhat intimidating. So, my questions are:What tools would I need to cut my Kivik in half and reattach the one arm and leg to the newly-cut, former-middle part? Would I need different tools to cut the wood and metal?Would the cost of the tools make the project not worth it? Like, would it just be cheaper to buy a big chair or have an upholsterer do it?How much of a pain in the ass would it be? I'm female, small, and reasonably strong, but not abnormally so for my size and gender. In addition, the back cushion is not very comfortable since it's basically just polyfill, and it tends to smush down too much to provide any support. What would it cost to just replace it with a chunk of firm foam? Or would it need to be specially cut by an upholsterer?Thank you! Please feel free to post any other advice that you think might be useful! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2v9tW48
