I hate this because it's wasteful (in the same sense that repairing can be more expensive than replacing in many cases, mostly because we externalize the cost of the waste), but…

I spent $100+ having a locksmith come out to our house to re-key a lock set. I later spent <$40 for a brand new lock set at Home Depot where they matched the new set to my key at no extra charge. (Of course, if you don't need the set to match any existing keys, you can skip that and use the new keys that come with the new set).

(Note that if you are buying a house and re-key right away, there's apparently some U.S. tax credit or something, so that may still be sensible in that case, dunno the details).
