I just got the renewal package from my apartment building and they are raising my rent by $300. I live in a city where this is fairly typical and is legal.
However, I looked at my apartment building's website and found they are listing a nearly identical apartment to mine for $200 less than the rental offer that they gave us. I also found that they had advertised this apartment on craigslist for the same lower price. This other apartment is the same floor plan and is on the same floor. It's literally the exact same apartment.
How do I bring this up politely? My property management has an office in our building where I stop by to pick up packages and I was thinking that I would drop in to talk about it. My boyfriend and I had already talked to her about how we wanted to renew and she said she would request that the regional office offered us a similar rent to our current rate. I'm not sure if she approved our rent increase or if it just gets mailed out automatically.
I live with my boyfriend and two cats (which means we pay extra "pet rent"). We've never had any complaints about noise or any issues. We've lived in the apartment for 2 years. Our lease is up at the end of August.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!
