My boss is getting ready to take a month leave for health reasons and I'm absolutely flummoxed at what to do. We are the only 2 people in the Payroll department which oversees well over 2000 employees across 20 companies. His leaving will absolutely cripple me and will definitely lead to lots of OT (I'm non-exempt).
I want to either ask him for A) temporary hired help since there is no way I can do this on my own--at least with no errors; since we deal with employee wages everything needs to be double checked by the other (and I can't ask other HR coworkers to help since they are not privy to all salary information) or B) a raise because I am essentially doing the work of two people.
Here's the thing: I have no intention of remaining with this company much further (underpaid, undervalued, and chain of command sucks) so I'm more keen on Option A. Because of my unhappiness with the job and position, I'm not sure how to ask without sounding upset ("Since you're going to be out for a month and I'm taking on your work as well, I think I either need supplemental help or a raise because this is a lot of work"). Is it shitty of me to take Option B if presented, even if I plan to leave within the next 3 months?
