In april 2015 I moved into my current apartment with a 1 year lease. Up front I paid $1050 for first month, $1050 for last month, and a $100 key deposit.

After the initial year lease was up I went month to month and continued at the 1050 price until December 2016 when it went up to 1100. When this price increase occurred I did not sign anything, and the notice said nothing more than the rent will increase by 50 dollars a month.

In march of 2017 the apartment building was bought from the previous owner and is now under new management. When this change happened there were no new lease terms or anything that I was asked to sign by the new management company.

I am now in the process of moving out and have informed the new management company that June will be my last month in the apartment. I received a response back saying that I will owe a $50 difference between the 1050 i originally put down for last month's rent upon move in and the 1100 current price.

I looked at my lease and there is nothing saying that any last month's rent already given up front is subject to pricing changes. Again I signed nothing and it was not mentioned in the price increase letter that this would effect last month's rent already held. And again I signed nothing with the new management company that could change the terms of my lease.

As a resident of Massachusetts, do I legally owe them the extra $50?
