An older acquaintance of mine was telling me about a scam they recently ran into on Craigslist, and I thought it worth sharing for others to be aware.
What the scammers did was take the listing of an area home that was actually vacant and for sale, and put an advertisement on CL that the home was available for rent. All the details for the home matched reality - the photos, address, description of features - so you wouldn't immediately know this was not the real owner you were contacting and might assume it was a sale-or-rent search. The tipoff for my acquaintance was that the 'homeowner' wanted an awful lot of personal information before even being willing to meet or show them the house. Things like their SSNs and bank account information. He thought it just seemed fishy and contacted the agent listed as selling the home, who confirmed the CL advert was fake. Someone more unassuming could easily have become a victim of identity theft here. Be careful!
