Just wanted to write in and say thanks to everyone who contributes here! I am a lurker and since reading posts here have started to get my finances under control. I was able to pay off a student loan a little early and also saved a ton of money by switching car insurance companies. But the main victory was that I had a buddy who me and my wife loaned a couple thousand to because he had to move his family and didn't have the money up front for first month , last month, and security deposit.
Now it took my buddy almost 3 years to pay us back all the while he was making trips and spending money. My good wife would see his facebook posts on the topic and become so mad, as she should. I would talk to him about it but there was always one more thing. I would have to dump a pail of water on the wife to cool her down. And I told my buddy not to post stupid stuff and to pay us back ASAP.
Now everyone here would think this guy is a real jerk, but I justify the friendship because he was my old college roommate . He helped us out in a big way a few times and he also was my hiking and camping buddy. After we loaned him the money he went though a divorce. So I gave him some room. But I am happy to say that he paid us back in full the other day. I plan to put the amount on my credit card bill along with some other money I have saved up and it should cut what I owe the card in half. I both love and hate my buddy and loaning money to friends is the hardest thing. Next time we do something nice we will simply gift it. The money, and my buddy being a jerk, did effect the friendship in some ways as it should. Now I just hope the check clears.
