My wife and I have about $150,000 to invest. So far we have some , a few vanguard funds (Dividend Growth and Wellington), and over 65% in cash. We are going to move our money into the 3-fund portfolio suggested by most here:

  • Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSMX)
  • Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund (VGTSX)
  • Vanguard Total Bond Market Fund (VBMFX)

I am 45, my wife is 35 and we do not need this money entirely for our retirement because we both with have decent pensions, but we don't want to lose it either and would like to leave some decent cash for our kids when we die.

We are currently a little scared of the market right now...I think it is really high and suspect a downward trend soon. But what do I know? We were thinking of a 40% VTSMX, 20% VGTSX, and 40% VBMFX just to be a bit cautious. What we also thought of was putting our money in monthly for the next 12 or 24 months to cost average. I am not entirely sure what the best move is. Any advice?
