The back of our garage has a flat roof with access from the second floor. When we purchased it the railing was very old and rotting. I have removed it and repainted the flashing, and I want to rebuild a solid railing. I'd like some advice on how to secure the posts. You can see in here http://ift.tt/2sceCBM that the house is brick, with metal flashing on the edge. I assume that there is old wood underneath the flashing, but I can't see a way to check without ripping it all off. I also don't know if something like this would be suitable and secure. So my questions:What might be under the flashing, and is it a suitable base for a secure railing?Should I take the time and spend the money to rip up the flashing and put down something better (and if so, what)?Would a surface mounting bracket be a suitable and secure foundation for a deck railing in this situation?Thank you for any and all suggestions. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2smy50Y
