I guess some marketing type decided that 12% was the breaking point. Anyways, I only use their machines every few years to convert $200-$300 in coins back to cash. IIRC, just a few years ago it was 8%.
A very helpful Walmart employee informed me that the bank across the road also counts coins. They charge 10%. If you have an account, it is free. I called my bank, Huntington, and was informed that the best they could do was provide coin wrappers. I don't have that kind of time.
So, check with your local banks before being bent over by Coinstar.
