Thanks to R/Personalfinance and too much time on R/eve I was able to help my friend avoid a check scam.
She has worked in personal care type positions dealing mainly with older people and the disabled. She was looking for a job recently and got contacted by a guy whos mother was moving to our city and was looking for an in home person to check on meds and prepare meals.
This sounded great and I was really hoping it was true. They were going to offer 450 a week for 3 days of work. This is where my spidy senses started to tingle.
This went on for a week or so of bad English texts and emails detailing what the mother would need and the details of the move. Then came yesterday when she showed me the final email where she would be required to deposit her first weeks check along with 2k for the movers that she would need to pay. I immediately remembered this scam and googled the name of the moving company, first thing that came up was a similar named company, second thing was a forum post about his very scam.
My friend tracked the letter with the check from GA, but the company was based in NV, and was supposed to pay for her move to IA.
No one should ask you to pay someone else in the age of paypal. Be vigilant!!!
