I don't understand why anyone would sign up for the student health care plan. Its ~$1200 a semester, and the only benefit is $0 copay when going to the student health services. Everything else (deductible, various copays) are higher than the silver on healthcare.gov. With that said, the silver is 1/4 of the cost. edit: bad math, its 12.5% of the cost.

I rarely go to the doctor. The majority of my visits are routine checkups. I really only need insurance in case of emergencies like a broken bone, car wreck, etc. Regardless of this, the Primary Doctor copay on the silver is $5. That's $5 vs 0$ with the student. I don't see that difference adding up to the $2200 out of pocket payment per year difference. I'd have to go to the doctor every single day, with 80 of those days going twice for the $5 to overtake the 0$.

Could anyone clue me in to why I would spend 4x the money for the student when the silver seems much better?

Is this silver possible going away with the new leadership in government?
