I'm 23, and starting a job in Washington, DC, this week. (Side note: yay!). The employer offers health insurance, with the company paying for 80% of the recommended plan. (I still haven't seen this, so when I finally get a closer look that may influence my decision.)

I have a younger sibling, so leaving my parents' healthcare plan wouldn't save them all too much in insurance costs. They have a high deductible, but are happy to keep me on the plan with the understanding that I pay for all my own costs incurred.

Do I rip off the bandaid and get my own insurance? Do I wait to see which plan is better? (I mean, yes I will do that but I doubt it'll be a stark difference.) My only concern is the lack of certainty in the event my employment changes. Ostensibly, I've got three years left of being able to stay on my family's plan, while I doubt I'll have this job for more than two.

Anyone with recent experience in making this switch? Any ELI5s to point me to? Thanks in advance.

(Ugh, at this point I might just switch because it'll force me to become literate in this area. Healthcare is still confounding.)
