I'm currently a student and don't have medical insurance whatsoever (don't judge). I got into an accident (bike accident, no biggie) last October and got admitted to emergency. I got a bill a month later and it was around $1200. I thought that was reasonable for the things they did. But a month ago, I went to the emergency because I was having trouble breathing and they did a an EKG test. I didn't receive a bill at my address but I got a voicemail saying I had a debt of $7.5K+ to pay off. I was so surprised to hear that. I had checked the average cost of EKG test w/o insurance and they range from $800-$2500. I checked online that you can negotiate the price with the hospital. But as far as I know, I think the pill was passed on to a debt collection agency and I heard that you have little bargaining power if that happens. As of right now, I don't really know what my options are. I'm not really able to pay off the bill now and really the only options I can think of right now is to call them and plead them to reduce the cost. Also, is it possible to get medical insurance and pay off the bill afterwards? I'm really uninformed in how the system works so any information would be helpful. Thanks.
