I live in the DC area and after the second time in less than 3 years that a jackass driver totaled our car, we decided that we'd get by without one. Which has been going alright, since we live in a fairly walkable neighborhood, except for one thing: food. (Well, and doctor's appointments, which we use uber for). The stores within walking distance are really expensive and the produce wasn't very good. So my MIL recommended Instacart a few months ago, which has been lovely, except I just signed up at mint.com and saw that I've been spending almost $850 a month! Buying all generics and healthy foods! Before, I'd shop sales at Harris Teeter and spend $70 a week. Admittedly, that was before our child was eating solids, but still.

Would it be worth buying a used car (NOT a beater) and then shopping at Aldi's and HT? We're in a small apartment so buying bulk isn't really a good option. My husband estimates a decent used car would run about $400-500 a month, including gas, insurance, and maintenance.
