Back in February I received my last paycheck before hearing that the company would be closing down. It's for about $700 so I am pretty concerned. I received a $12 fee for it bouncing.
I called the owner, who I'll refer to as A, and explained what happened to him. He picked up the first call I ever tried, and said that he closed the bank account for the company, hence the bounced check, and he would have another sent to me. He asked that I text him my address after the call, asked if I had found a new job yet, then proceeded to pitch a health insurance sales job for his new company that he had already started, and which was completely unrelated from the company which I worked for before (a cell phone store franchising company).
He said several times throughout the call that he'd send me information about the job, as I was feigning interest the entire time just to keep some kind of rapport with him so that he'd just send me my check. After the call I sent him my address and he sent me absolutely nothing about the job he just spent 15 minutes pitching to me.
I wait a week or so then try calling him again. No answer. I only call a couple times a day so as not to disturb him, and leave a voicemail every couple of days. Finally I try with a different phone number and he picks up. He acts surprised that I hadn't received the check, and said that he had someone send it out for me, and he'd make sure that it would get sent out. I stressed how I had to unexpectedly take out student loans because I couldn't receive the money, and sent him my address again after the call.
It's now been almost 4 months since the check was issued and I haven't received anything. I had several people tell me that there's nothing I can do unless I shell out big money for an attorney, and in which case it won't be worth how much I spend in the whole process.
Any advice for what I can do at this point would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you.
tl;dr A $700 paycheck bounced and my employer said twice that he'd have new checks sent out. I had to use a new phone number to get him to answer my calls, and I still haven't received any compensation for my work.
