A little setup - my wife and I are a single car family, and I'm leaving the car at home with her while I travel to visit my mother for Mothers' Day tomorrow.
- I could rent a car for 1 day, 1 way, for ~$35.
- I could get a bus ticket all the way home for ~$70.
My little brother lives in another part of the state. Since our routes would be the same for the latter part of the trip, I can bus half way then carpool with him for the rest of the trip to bring the cost of my bus fare down to $36.
This beats option 1 by saving me several hours behind the wheel plus the costs of tax/gas/insurance, with an added benefit of keeping one unneeded car off the road.
It beats option 2 by saving me $35 and 4 hours with strangers (granted that could be fun).
