I've been a ticked that pocket squares are so expensive; since a regular white square is really all I need 95% of the time, I have been trying to find sales on hankies, but whenever I drop into Nordstrom Rack or Jos.A Bank etc, I always walk out since they're 10-15 bucks or more.
The thought occurred to me to go to Hobby Lobby, and sure enough, they have solid and (very simple) patterned cotton 18" handkerchiefs for $1. Using their perpetual 40% off coupon, I paid maybe 66 cents for a white one. I decided to cut it into four 9" squares, and roll-hemmed two of them with white thread, and one of them with purple. If you wanted to use a machine, you could do it in 5 minutes or less. I was watching netflix anyhow, and spent about 20 minutes per square making a rolled hem and now I've got four 100% cotton squares for less than a buck.
If you factor in the cost of going to the store, and the time spent hemming them, it might not be worth it to you but out of pocket cost for 66 cents, and paying just a fraction less attention to episodes of My Name is Earl and That 70's Show, I think it works for me.
