(Obligatory I'm not sure if this is the right place but hoping you all have good advice because you usually do)
I had an account with the online tutor service Chegg that apparently was compromised last week. I started to receive tons of automated emails that said "XXXX requested a lesson from you" or "You received payment from XXXX". When I tried to log in my email\password wouldnt reset and I couldnt reset using my email and instead used the fact that the account was attached to facebook.
When I logged in there were several "lessons" that had been requested and then completed by someone else who had apparently been using the account, as the name, phone number and email had been changed, as well as the paypal email for comments. I tried to work things out with Chegg via their customer service but had no real luck (i.e. "We will contact you in 1 business day, no really") so instead had them cancel and delete the account - I had never really used it so that was no big deal.
What is a big deal (in my mind at least) is my somewhat juvenile reaction to it. I emailed the address that had replaced mine on the account essentially asking what the fuck they were doing on it, to which they replied last night with:
"I dont care, About your account :). Goodluck, I have everything about you :) "
So... yes. What are the best resources for protecting myself from identity theft at this point. This could be bluster but I'd rather be overly protective than less so.
Again, if there's a better place for this I apologize and thanks for any help.
