I'm moving from Missouri to California, and will be selling off everything that doesn't fit in my sedan to drive with me. However, I have one large item that won't fit in my car (with me, the pets and my other belongings) that I don't want to part with for sentimental reasons: a large wooden hope chest that belonged to my grandparents.
I'm looking for an inexpensive way to get it from Missouri to California. The options I've explored so far are: * Installing a trailer hitch and cargo basket on my old car to strap it on to. I'm worried that it will block partial visibility of my lights though, and the hitch/basket will probably run me $300ish together. * Shipping via UPS. It looks like I could do that for under $200, but I'm wondering how much it needs to be packaged (can I wrap it in paper so that the label can stay with it? Do I need to get a giant cardboard box and packing material?) * Shipping via Greyhound. Would I need to package it beyond attaching a label or something to a handle?
The box itself is probably 50 lbs, and roughly 4' x 2' x 2'. It latches shut but doesn't lock and has two metal handles on either side.
Are there other shipping avenues I should be looking into?
