I'm always lurking through the writing instrument isles longer than I should in stores so much so that I've been monitored by "security" like I was shoplifting. I am an engineer so I have used mechanical pencils extensively. I catch myself creepily lurking over someone when they have a mechanical pencil trying to define brand and qualities of the pencil in hand.

Since the beginning of high school (20+ years ago) I have been loyal to Cross Century 0.5mm pencils despite their shortcomings due to the retractable tip and twist advance mechanism. For writing smoothness the now discontinued Zebra F-402 came in second for me but I have exhausted my supply of these. Lately I've been using the Uni Kuru Toga Roulette.

So for an everyday carry pencil that can go into a front pants pocket is there any suggestions? For obvious reasons the tip needs to retract. It seems like it would make sense if it had a side advance mechanism instead of an end click advance since the end clicks could be activated in ones pocket. Any help would be appreciated and maybe a solution would put an end to my creepy stares at nearby doodlers.
