I'm 32 and have a ton of back taxes that I have no idea how to handle. I've talked to people, done research and i'm still left having a very limited idea of my options - let alone a solid idea of how to move forward with a definitive solution.

I live in NYC.

I owe $17,000 in federal taxes - $19,000 in state taxes.

I was on a payment plan of $1000/mo. Then, due to a $200 discrepancy on a tax return, five months ago VOIDED my automatic deductions/payment agreement. Even though I paid the $200 immediately.

Now I have a dedicated "Tax Agent" that is claiming they are issuing my account to collections - and wont reinstate the payment plan unless I pay double what I was paying monthly.

I've since left my last job in January and currently freelancing - I really cannot afford to live under threat of bank account to be drained on some random morning.

Worth mentioning, it is nearly impossible to get this guy from the state on the phone. I call multiple times a day. ZERO help using the state or fed websites to get a clear understanding of my bills, payment history, fee's, or options is so laughably bad it feels deliberately confusing/broken (and I design software for a living)

Some thoughts/options i've been thinking through:

  • File Bankruptcy.

  • Put a chunk the balance on a credit card.

  • Negotiate a settlement (is this even a thing? I've read a little about 'Offer in Compromise')

  • Pay what they ask and have this hovering over me for years.

  • Rob a bank.

ANY advice on the above would be beyond appreciated.
