I recently got a new job - so now I have a two hour bus journey every morning, and some money I want to spend to make myself feel better about it. My old mp3 player has finally died, at the grand old age of 10, and I would like to buy a new one for commuting. Unfortunately all my knowledge is now 10 years out of date.
Ideal features/etc are:
-
lots of storage space; 32GB would be an absolute minimum, and honestly I want a lot more than that. this is my main criteria, really
-
that it sounds nice, can play a variety of audio, has battery life enough to last a day (6hrs+); I kind of imagine this all goes without saying for players nowadays
-
a touchscreen would be nice, since I eventually got very tired of finicky analogue controls with my last one
-
Bluetooth, I guess, since I think I want to buy some nice headphones for once and they will probably end up being wireless
-
I'm in the UK, if it makes a difference
On the other hand I don't care about streaming services, or watching video, downloading apps, etc, so that functionality isn't important. It's almost exclusively for listening sitting on the bus/a plane, so it doesn't need to survive the gym or a beach or whatever. I've also never liked Apple products, so unless someone makes a spectacularly good case for it, I almost certainly won't be jumping into iTunes and whatever this late in the day.
Budget: I paid about £120 (about $240 at the time, more like $160 now) for my last one a decade ago, which was a lot. I like buying a more expensive thing that works well and will last a number of years, so I expect to spend a chunk on a new one. I would still hesitate at much more than about £500 ($640), though. I also have nothing against spending less money if the player still fits the bill.
