Hello,
I may have missed it, but I can't find the answer in the side bar.
My SO's mother, single mom, claimed him as a dependent. He is a student with a part time job. He turned 25 Sep of last year.
He has none what-so-ever support from her, except she still has him on his insurance. He lives with me, pays all of his own bills, student loans are in his name, he has NOT lived with her since he was in the 10th grade. He actually only talks to her every few months.
With that said, she claimed him.
He's 25.
I've read the law and it states he has to be 24 and under to claim him. He does NOT mind her claiming him as "she needs the money too." I don't think she should because she's so not apart of his life, but my opinion doesn't matter in this case.
By claiming him, with the IRS notice this and come back for her?
Should he just file that he is a dependent or that he is not? If he says that his mother does claim him, will that mess up his taxes?
If he decides he wants to dispute it and that he is a single man w/o her, will he have to file on paper? I've read a little bit about that. Just trying to make things clear.
Thanks!
