Currently my boyfriend and I live with my parents, and we work independently as pet sitters. We want to move out, but I still feel that we aren't making enough money to do that yet. We already tried moving out once before, and ended up back with the parents so I want to make sure we are ready this time. However I also might be worrying too much, and we might already be ready so I want to ask your advice on this situation.
Here is some background on our finances. After we take out 30% for taxes I make about $1,300 a month, and he makes about $1,000 a month. I currently have no expenses, but he already has about $500 a month in bills between health insurance, car insurance, student loan, and a car loan. Since we drive for work we are spending between $125-$200 on gas each every month as well. In my surrounding areas (even the cheaper areas that I would typically not want to move to) the rent for a small one bedroom(500sqft) is $600-$650 to start plus gas, electric, and a lot of them water too. Even if I estimate at the low end, $30 for electricity, $20 for gas, $20 for water and $60 for internet we are looking at a total of $730-$780 a month for rent & bills. Then we still need to calculate in groceries which are atleast $100 a month per person.
At this rate I would have to cover most or all living expenses in order for my boyfriend to have money for his bills, gas and food. However that doesn't leave me much for savings. We have considered options like Uber for him so he can make more money, but his cars too old, and he's got some road rage I don't think customers would enjoy very much.
When I moved out in 2012 I had an apartment that was 750 sq ft and I paid $525 after the pet fees. Now they want $600-$650 for 500 sq ft. The place I used to have now costs $750 a month.
Any and all advice would be appreciated. Let me know what you think of those numbers, or if you know of anywhere that has flex hours the way Uber does, but that isn't a taxi service. Or anything else that you can think of. Thank you so much!
