I was offered a new position and after the interview the offer was 6K lower than i had asked for. I am qualified as an environmental scientist and i was offered a non advertised position through a contact i went to university with who i knew loosely. I sent my resume and had an interview, they seemed very keen to acquire me as i have a skill set outside the experience of their current employees. They have people performing my role but not with my exact qualifications. They tried to short change me on the offer and i was hesitant to counter the offer but after careful consideration i decided i would stand my ground as the offer was only slightly higher than my current package at the time. I was sent a draft contract via email and told if all was well they would have it formally written up. I called the manager and explained the offer was lower than i was anticipating. He explained there was a problem with parity with other staff and i had a whole heap of arguments ready as to why i was worth more than what they offering, and it was inline with what we discussed during the interview. I never had to get into the argument as he said he would discuss it with the other manager and get back to me. A few hours later i recieved the updated offer.

I guess the moral of the story is i almost took the smaller offer, decided to stand my ground based on the arguments i had ready to justify it but just countering was enough to get what i asked for.
