Maybe not the right sub, but I feel like this is close to my target audience...

The only thing I hate more than spending money on myself, is spending money on something for myself and having it wear/break/fall apart before it should. I buy lots of used quality things, clean/repair/refurbish them, and enjoy them forever.

As some examples, I have two Tag Heuer watches. Bought them on eBay, non-functioning for less than a new Timex, paid someone a couple bucks to fix them, and have nice watches for almost no money. I buy my clothes from Goodwill; nothing fancy, but the same brands you see at the mall. I have a couple suits that were pricey when new that I had altered and cleaned; now I have tailored suits for $12.95. I bought a beat-up Lexus with an oil leak that didn't run for $800, fixed it up, traded for a newer Volvo with an overheating problem, fixed that, and sold it or enough money to buy a Mercedes model I’ve wanted for a long time. Spent some money to get it to all better-than-new and now, for a total investment of less than $4,000, I have one of my dream cars (depreciation probably helped more than being frugal, but that’s not the point).

I'm looking for some inspiration from fellow penny pinchers who like to invest time to get things instead of money. What have you done to get things you wanted without spending money?
