I realize this is going to sound insane, but it's just something I want to do to see if I can do it.

I've measured every square inch of floor space in my apartment and came up with 518.2 sf of usable space. I was sold this place as 620 sf, but I'm not complaining, because I have a nice porch and enclosed courtyard too.

Anyway, since my BR is mostly stacked with boxes and furniture, I live here like I'm in a studio, with my bed in the LR. I started thinking about this, and honestly, I'm pretty comfortable in this much space. The only thing I don't want to give up is my closet space in the BR.

So I took out my measurements, subtracted the BR space, and came up with 353.4 sf of living space (yes, the BR is HUGE - 164.8 sf). That's not much, but this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to rearrange this space and see how much I can cram into it without being totally uncomfortable or having it look like a storage locker. It will mean utilizing every square inch of vertical space, but once I've subtracted the non-essentials, I feel like I can do this. The only drawback is that there are a couple of large pieces of furniture in the BR (a dresser and an antique washstand) that would maybe not work out here, but that's not a problem, because of why I'm doing this.

I've always wanted to live in a 400 sf studio, and there are plenty of those in this town. If I can make this 353.4 sf work, then I can surely fit those other two pieces into 400 sf. Not that I want to move, mind you, but I want to see if I can do it. I've downsized from a 3/2/1 to this space over the years, so I feel like since I'm on a decluttering spree anyway, I might as well go full-tilt and see how much space I can free up.

It's going to take awhile, but what I'm going to do is pretend I'm moving into a smaller space, and have to get rid of all this crap. I'll just take the "keep" stuff into the LR and figure out how to make it fit.

It's just an experiment, so if it doesn't work, at least I will know I can't live in 400 SF. Whatever happens, I'll still free up a lot of space in the BR, right?
