Hello fellow humans of reddit,
First, thanks a lot for all the tips and advice which everyone provides here to help those of us looking for hope and a strategy to climb the mountains of debt we have.
My story : Make $82k, had 47k in student debt thanks to an Ivy League STEM degree (which totally was NOT worth the hefty price tag btw). I'm an international student, so this decision was pretty stupid financially in hindsight.
Anyway, I got a decent job in San Diego, but the pay is just okay for SoCal. Here's a breakup of my expenses :
- Rent + Utilities = $796!
- Car Payment / Insurance = $0
- Bus Pass = $72
- Cellphone Plan = $27
- Frugal lifestyle
Being an international guy with limited visa duration, I did not want to cut back on travelling which I love. So, I decided to not have a car an instead spend the cash on making memories of travelling this beautiful land.
I definitely get awkward reactions from people both at work and elsewhere when they hear 'no car'. I look forward to continuing living this lifestyle and travelling for the rest of my time in the USofA ( ~14 months ).
To anyone who is reading this and has a ton of debt, my $0.02: Don't give a $hit to what other's think or say. You've gotta do what you gotta do. Getting yourself out of debt ASAP is the best thing you can do for your future. Good luck and keep plugging away!
