Hi PF,

I was recently at Chase, adding my wife's name to one my checking accounts. She has been using BofA for her checking and also has a credit card there. While waiting for the banker to finish, I tell my wife, "You should cancel your old checking, but keep the CC open, so as to not ding your credit."

The banker then chimes in, "Canceling your CC won't impact your credit, you should cancel it if you aren't using it."

I reply, "So canceling her one credit card, that she has had for 3 years won't impact her length of credit? Which impacts her overall credit?"

He says, "Not really. Different Credit Bureaus use different metrics, so it doesn't really matter." At this point I didn't know how to respond, so I said "That's not what I've read."

I don't understand why this banker would give this type of advice. Was he feeling us out to see if we were ignorant? Is he an idiot? Was he saying that just to offer us a Chase CC? (I already have a Freedom Unlimited card)

The only thing I know about him is he's been at Chase a few years and his degree is in International Studies.

Has anyone else experienced this? Should I look for another bank, or ask for a different Chase banker? We will be applying for a mortgage in about a month, so I want to know if I should avoid this guy. He gave me his card and asked me to set up the appointment w/ the mortgage officer through him, "because I work very closely with her." (Does he get a referral commission?) Something just didn't feel right. Any opinions you have on this are greatly appreciated.
