Hello!

Yesterday I started having some severe chest pains (I'm fine, we're chalking it up to either anxiety or a sprain), so I left work and went to an urgent care center. I have insurance through my job, and expected to pay the usual deductible.

When I sat and filled out paperwork, they told me because I haven't maxed out my deductible, it was their policy to charge a $90 fee separate from even being seen. This seemed unusual and almost shady. Charging me more money because I haven't spent more money? That said, I was in a lot of pain, didn't have a regular doctor, and didn't want to go to the ER, so I signed off and paid.

I accept I won't be getting the money back, but is this a common practice? If so, why? It seems unnecessary and almost predatory.

Thanks for your time!
