Hi,

Although this question is not directly related to simple living per se, it is indirectly related in this way: many of us have an interest in simple living because we are interested in living a good life. A lot of us think that part of what it means to live a good life is to live an ethical life. Now, not all of us are going to subscribe to the same ethical or moral code, but this doesn't mean that we can't still talk to each other and help one another figure out how to accomplish the goals we'd like to achieve.

With that said, here is my question: how can I avoid the sadness and depression that comes with "feeling the weight of the world on one's shoulders?" Let me explain: I'll be doing just fine, but, I'll start to think about the hundreds of millions of people suffering from a combination of abject poverty, illness, and hunger, which leads me to think about all kinds of other injustices and sadness in the world, and so on and so forth as this snowball grows and grows.

It puts me into a state of despair and it becomes very hard to let go of. In trying to let go, I'll try to focus on doing something else, but, this often leads me to feeling selfish, and again, the ball starts rolling again. It feels like it's my duty to go out into the world and do something to remedy these injustices. In a lot of ways, I want to, but, due to my current situation, I am not yet free of debts to some people that I need to handle before going off and trying to help.

Has anyone here read, or heard, or watched any good advice on this topic? Anything from the works of ancient to modern thinkers who have took up trying to answer this question would be beyond helpful. Of course, this is a discussion, and if you have any insight into it as well, please do share. It is simply impossible for any one of us to conquer these injustices single-handedly and it is important to remember that we need to help ourselves as well.
