I've been working at a company for over two years. I'm OK with working here but I don't think I'm being paid enough. I did some research and found out I'm underpaid by about 20%. So I asked for a raise to match the market rate of $X. My boss told me that she will have to do some research about that, and then told me that one important thing to keep in mind is age. She said that I'm still young, I barely just started. I agree that experience does come with age, but what if I had started working here when I was 30 but had less experience. Would that command a higher salary to start with? That doesn't seem right to me. What do I make of this?

My background is in cs but I think my question relates to any field.
