As seen in r/highmileclub it is possible to have a car that just refuses to die and runs great year after year after year. I think the real trick is to have as few options as possible and this means a standard transmission, roll up windows, not a single electronic gadget anywhere. Therefore, nearly nothing to break inside the car. The engine gets oil changes like clockwork and with 300k on the odometer it is getting a bit spotty looking on the outside. Sure I have to totally replace the entire brake system every four years and the brake pads and rotors every two years. Big deal, this is a bottom of the barrel Hyundai Accent where a total brake job is about $400 all in. I mean everything plus the little hydralic cylinders in the rear and the calipers in the front. One thing I feel is true is that the automobile has become nothing but rolling debt for many people. Never paid off and always a monthly payment. For five years I pay nothing but the maintenance. However what it really needs is a body and paint job. Anyways, vehicles are a major collossal pit of costs and I am convinced that the manufacturers create everything with materials that fail within five years or less.
