I'm planning a three month trip sometime in mid-Aug to November. Flying in from Europe, renting a car and circling through all of the West basically from Washington to Western Texas.

What would be the best place to start the trip considering the car rental rates? Obviously I can check what the rates are now and I do have a pretty good idea, but I have no idea which way they move in August, e.g. is summer in Las Vegas cheaper because of heat and nobody smart going there, or expensive because of tourists (or again cheap thanks to the large competition)? At the same time, it's no good if Seattle is 100 bucks/month cheaper if the flight is $400 more. And once I get the flight several months in advance, I'll be locked in to that city, therefore I need to find a good combo.

Anyway, my current picks are Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Portland, maybe SF Bay Area.
