We just moved and the whole kitchen needs to be replaced including the dishwasher but we needed to replace the bathroom first so kitchen will wait. Anyhoo I've been doing dishes by hand. It's just myself, husband and toddler.
Weekdays: Tupperware from breakfast and lunch at work/daycare. Then dinner dishes, usually some pots or crockpot.
Weekend: a few more cooked meals at home, but not much more (we sometimes like to go out, shhh).
Normally I would hand wash anything "that we only have one of", like pots and some specific Tupperware. Then I would rinse the plates, cups and cutlery and put those in the dishwasher. So far the few extra seconds of washing the plates hasn't been bad, and I got a new dish rack that holds everything and then I put it all away in the morning.

So I ask, which is more cost effective, including initial cost of machine, in water usage and time, to wash by hand or use a dishwasher?
