I have an IRA at Schwab and all my stuff is set to reinvest dividends. When you view the Portfolio in Schwab it shows you your gain/loss based on Cost Basis and current market price. The problem is that it does not treat the reinvested dividends and capital gains as free money. It treats them just as if you put new money to purchase those fractional shares. So the real Gain is quite different from what is shown on the site. To calculate my real gain, I have to go to history and take apart all money that was reinvested and add it to the gain shown on the site.
Is there a better way to get an accurate picture? I know this problem is not unique to Schwab.
