Hello r/personalfinance!

I'm in my late twenties and I've recently started a position within a small IT company (NON-IT related position) but I was started at a $38k salary (Previous job was at a retailer earning $33k). Since the beginning of my employment, I outperformed a more experienced individual in the department whom was hired 2 weeks after me (at a much higher salary, who they let go after a few months because of it) to supervise the department (2-3 people) and have been given multiple responsibilities by management, which I've performed flawlessly.

Next month will mark the 6th month period, just a few weeks ago they held yearly reviews in which the few months during 2016 they had nothing negative to say about me, everything positive. During said review, they mentioned since I had not been there a year, they could not offer me their usual yearly pay raise, though they did offer me a small bonus of $500, which I accepted without being overtly excited. I also mentioned to them that seeing as my 6 month review was coming up, that I would like to sit down and go over my performance and compensation once more.

Now then... Am I doing something wrong here? I'm starting to doubt myself and my ability to negotiate toward a higher salary. I'm almost in my thirties and living with my significant other, though bills/rent are split between us, $38k is not something I can grow off of. I want to shoot for the $45k mark, not sure if requesting that off the bat is outrageous or not and how I could pull it off to begin with. Any encouragement or tips would be greatly appreciated!

tl:dr 6 month review, looking to get more $$, what do?
