First, my baseline question is how can I buy a house on a weak ass salary?
Some background:
I am a 28 year old female living in North TX making less than 35k a year. Not college-educated, but currently working on that. Paying 100% out of pocket for my local community college. My job does not offer tuition reimbursement to any small degree. If it matters, I am working toward an Associate degree in Accounting. University is a maybe because I'm freaking out thinking I'll never be out of debt in my lifetime if I attend.
I have no children, but I do live with my life partner. I am trying to encourage him to get into college, but the next semester will start in less than two weeks, and he hasn't budged. I'm not asking for relationship advice because I love him very much and I do not plan on leaving him. My point is, currently I'm kind of alone right now on the adult responsibilities, and I'd like to know if it's even possible for me buy a house on my current salary, soon. If so, how do I make this happen? Where do I even start? My mom is TERRIBLE with money, and my dad is self-employed but only works enough to survive. No one ever taught me these things. Basically what I'm looking for here is resources to pursue getting my shit together.
As an aside, I finally started contributing to my 401k in 2016, but I decided to stop for the time being in 2017 so I could afford the new-used (2014) car that I unexpectedly needed to buy. I also recently applied for a promotion at my current job, but I have not received a response yet. The position isn't open yet, but I'm hoping to be considered. I have excellent credit (755) which I attribute to previous college loans from my first unsuccessful college experience at age 18 (gig 'em) as well as stupid department store credit cards that I've been paying off like a champ.
Thanks for your time, guys. Any help greatly appreciated.
Edit: several words
