A few days ago I got a phone call from a man claiming to be from vanguard support responding to a question I asked through the secure email about 2 months earlier that had already been answered. He asked me for my security answers to verify my identity, but had no way of verifying that he was actually calling from vanguard. I told him that I could call him back on their support number, which he agreed to.
I don't think it was a phishing attempt, but seemed a little careless on vanguard's part. Just a heads up. Don't give your information or security answers to anyone who calls you. Call the number on their website.
