Hello, so I know this gets asked like every week but I have a slightly more unique situation.

I've recently been undertaking online Data-Science courses, have been applying at a number of companies and have just now received an offer of employment as a Jr. DS at a firm in Kansas. The offer contained a salary range and I believe the negotiation is next week. Are there any things that I should be looking into.

Quick points: -No matter what I'm taking this job. At any rate; at any benefits, it's an amazing opportunity for experience and I feel more than fortunate to have the opportunity (I know this, they know this)

  • I currently make 38k in the rural south and the range on for this position is 75-90k. (relocation assistance is available, so money really isn't the issue I just don't know how these things go.)

  • I currently am employed by a non-profit with amazing benefits such as time-off and holidays this company doesn't have nearly these type of benefits.

  • I am pretty much completely switching fields.

  • I am much more interested in education/training/mentoring opportunities than present-monetary compensation (I don't want to leave money on the table but I'm very aware that training/mentoring today may mean great things for me in the future)

I guess my main questions are how does this type of negotiation work? And how does one move across the country? What all does relocation assistance normally cover? Do I front the money or do they cut a check normally? Are there any major questions that I should be asking?

Also, I'm sorry I know I sound like a financial infant but one doesn't think about these things before it's one's time... I haven't given my 2 weeks at my current job (new job wouldn't start for a month) how should I handle this transition (pay for unused PTO, rolling over a 10k+ retirement fund, asking for future references...)?

Thank-you for any help/advice any of you wonderful financial gurus may provide.

All the best,
